You may recall last yearOfcom proposed changes to 0870 numbers which would come into affect in February 2008. Ofcom has now indicated that there will be a delay in implementing the changes to the regulation of calls to 0870 numbers and the proposed changes will no longer come into effect in February 2008.

We are awaiting guidance from Ofcom as to when these changes are due to be implemented, because no firm date has been set.

Options and Alternatives

Should you wish to prepare for the changes now and want to re-brand, you can do so with an alternative from the Redstone range of Non Geographic Numbers.
  • 0844 - Presents a national image with a local rate feel. The cost to the caller is no more 5 pence per minute. A share of the revenue is available on this range of numbers.

  • 0871 – For those organisations looking to obtain a revenue stream, 0871 numbers provide a good alternative to 0870.Callers are charged 10 pence per minute. 0871 numbers do come with some restrictions and will be monitored by the premium rate regulator Phonepayplus.

  • 0370 - Similar to 08XX numbers, they are not linked to a specific geographic area. Revenue share is not available on this range and inbound call charges will apply.

  • 030 – This range is specifically designated to the public/charitable sector only. Please refer to the Ofcom website www.ofcom.org.uk/telecoms/ioi/numbers/030_guidance for guidance on how individual bodies will be considered as eligible to use 030 numbers.
